Headlight Restoration, What You Need to Know
What it is
Headlight restoration removes the yellowed, oxidised top layer of the polycarbonate lens with progressive wet-sanding, then re-clarifies the surface with cutting compound, and finally seals it with a UV-resistant clear coating to prevent re-yellowing for years.
Who it's for
Drivers of any car 5+ years old (the age UV damage starts to show), MOT-failure cases for poor light output, owners about to sell who want the car to look 5 years younger, and lease-return drivers facing potential charges for fogged lenses.
When you need it
As soon as the lenses look hazy or yellow, once oxidation starts, it accelerates. Also urgent if night driving feels dim or you've been advised of an MOT advisory for headlight clarity. The earlier we catch it, the less aggressive the sanding needs to be.
Why use a professional
Polycarbonate headlight lenses have a factory UV coating. DIY kits sand off the oxidation but don't replace the UV coating, so the lenses re-yellow within 6–12 months. Our process includes a proper UV-resistant sealant, the restoration holds for 3–5 years.
Hazy Headlights Aren't Just Ugly, They're a Safety Issue
Yellowed headlights cut light output by up to 70% and scatter the beam pattern. That's a real safety problem at night and a real MOT problem at test time.
What happens if you leave it
- •Light output drop of 40–70% from a fully yellowed lens, directly impacts night visibility and stopping distance
- •MOT advisories and outright failures for poor headlight clarity
- •Trade-in value drop of £150–£400, yellowed lenses make any car look tired and unloved
- •Lease-return charges typically £75–£150 per fogged lens
- •DIY kits work for 6 months then yellow again, often worse than the original
Mistakes we see every week
- •Using a DIY kit without UV sealant, lenses yellow again within a year
- •Polishing the outside with cutting compound only, works for a week, oxidation returns
- •Buying replacement headlight units for £400–£900 each when restoration is £80–£140
- •Trying to scrub off yellowing with abrasive household cleaners (scratches the lens permanently)
- •Leaving yellowed headlights through an MOT and getting hit with a fail and re-test fee

Headlight Restoration That Actually Lasts
Most headlight restoration jobs fail because they skip the UV seal at the end. Here's the full process and what makes ours different.
Materials
Wet-sand paper from 800 grit through 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit; automotive cutting compound and finishing polish; a proper UV-resistant headlight sealant (cured rather than wiped on), the same chemistry as the original factory coating.
Method
Surrounding area masked, lens wet-sanded progressively to remove the oxidised top layer entirely, machine-polished back to full optical clarity, then sealed with cured UV coating. The cure step is what makes the difference between a 6-month and a 5-year result.
Variations
Standard pair restoration (most cars), heavily oxidised severe-case restoration (additional sanding stage), single-lens restoration (insurance replacement matching), pre-MOT clarity work, and pre-sale prep with full polish blend.
Situations it applies to
Cars 5+ years old, vehicles parked outdoors most of the time, MOT-advisory or fail cases, pre-sale prep, lease return prep, and night-driving safety concerns from owners who notice reduced light output.
When replacement is the better call
Internal lens condensation, cracked lens glass, scored lenses from previous botched DIY attempts, or lenses with internal silvering damage. We'll tell you straight, restoration won't fix those, and replacement is the right answer.
